The key is used to specify whether or not a public transport platform has an approach aid.
An approach aid is a specially formed kerb that helps buses to approach a platform. When the bus is approaching the platform, the curved kerb automatically guides the tires of the bus along the platform. This ultimately helps to reliably minimize the gap between bus and platform, which is crucial e.g. for wheelchair users, people with strollers. The gap width between vehicle and platform determines the difficulty for disabled people to enter a public transport vehicle. Approach aids also reduce tire rub and may prevent wheel hub damage.
How to map
An approach aid should only be tagged on elements with kerb=raised. Tags like kerb=lowered or kerb=flush imply kerb:approach_aid=no. On separate kerb elements kerb:approach_aid=no is assumed though it may be tagged differently (e.g. when the kerb of a platform is mapped separately).
